Follow these guidelines, and keep more money in your pocket.
It seems as though the only ways to save on car insurance is to never use your car, be a perfect driver and have superior credit. Since we’re all human and we make mistakes, this seems very unfair. Unfortunately, it’s true.
Saving money on car insurance requires you to strive to be as good a driver as possible, and to keep the cleanest record you can. But that’s only part of the story. Here are some of the most important guidelines to follow.
- Don’t drive a red car.
No offense to red cars, but you’re twice as likely to be stopped for speeding if your car is red than that tan car that’s going just as fast as you are. Seems strange, but it’s been proven that you’ll be pulled over more for speeding if your car is a bright color or a flashy sports car. So if you’d like to avoid a speeding ticket, go with a car that doesn’t call attention to itself.
- Update your policy.
Have you kept the same policy for years, and now that your car is ten years old, you haven’t changed anything? The bad news is that you could be paying the same rates you paid for a newer car. You may have also changed jobs and don’t have as long a commute as you used to, which can affect your car insurance payments. It’s always a good idea to ask your insurance agent to reevaluate your costs and see if they can get your rates down more.
- Avoid accidents.
This goes in the “obvious” category, but you should know just how much an accident can cost you. If you’re the cause of an accident, your rates may increase as much as 20 to 40%. That alone should motivate you to be a careful, defensive driver. Not to mention, you’ll save lives. If you happen to be in a small fender-bender, be sure to report it. Not reporting an accident could cause your policy to be cancelled and/or a claim to be denied.
- Cancel the long road trips.
Like to get out and see the open road? Don’t. If you don’t want to put an excessive amount of mileage on your car, avoid those cross-country road trips. If you put more mileage on your car, your insurance rates will go up.
5. Consider bundling your insurance.
If every car in your household is covered by the same company, you may get a multi-car discount. Also, when you purchase car and home insurance from the same company, you can save up to 20%.
