What Does Commercial Auto Insurance Protect Against?

Just like your personal auto insurance policy, Massachusetts commercial auto insurance has many different coverage options. Your policy is divided into specialized parts that will protect you in the case of an accident. There are sixteen coverage parts, which you can read about here.

Bodily Injury to Others: In the event that you are held responsible for an accident in Massachusetts, this section of coverage will protect you from legal liability for any injury you cause to persons outside of your vehicle.

Optional Bodily Injury to Others: This is very similar to the first section, with one very large difference. This version of Bodily Injury to Others offers protection for any accidents occurring outside the state of Massachusetts as well.

Personal Injury: This will provide for any medical expenses, lost income, and replacement cost services if an accident occurs, even if it’s your fault.

Collision: This optional coverage will repair any damage to your vehicle caused by a collision with another vehicle, even if it’s your fault.

Comprehensive: Many business owners will purchase this in addition to collision insurance. Instead of only having your vehicle covered for collisions with other cars, your businesses auto is now covered against wind damage, hail, collisions with animals, fire, theft, and vandalism.

Property Damage: This will cover your legal liability in the event that you damage another individual’s property with the insured auto.

Medical Payments: Medical bills can quickly become expensive. By purchasing this coverage, you will be covered for any necessary medical or funeral expenses you or your employees may accrue.

Bodily Injury from an Uninsured Auto: If a vehicle is uninsured and causes bodily injury to you or your employees, or if the driver cannot be determined (in the event of a hit and run), you will be covered under this insurance.

Bodily Injury Caused by an Underinsured Auto: If you are injured by another vehicle and their insurance does not cover all of your expenses, you will be covered by your own policy with this insurance.

Non-Owned Auto: This coverage protects your employees from legal liability if they cause injury or damage while using their own vehicle for your businesses activities.

Hired Auto Liability: If your business rents a vehicle, this policy will protect you from legal liability arising from the use of the rented vehicle.

Hired Auto Physical Damage: This will protect you and your employees from physical damage in case an accident is caused while you are performing business activities.

Drive Other Car: This policy is for a few employees you name on your commercial auto policy that are using vehicles other than a company owned vehicle. This is especially important for those who do not have their own personal auto policies, as it offers insurance protection in case they borrow someone else’s car on their own.

Loading and Unloading: This section of your commercial auto policy protects against damage caused while loading or unloading a covered vehicle, but will not cover the cargo itself.

Substitute Transportation: This part of your policy will reimburse you for transportation expenses while your vehicle is being repaired if specific conditions are met. Your policy will provide more details about this section.

Towing and Labor: The final section of your commercial auto policy, this will pay for the cost of towing and labor if your vehicle becomes disabled.
